I was hoping to have something a little bit more special today but with Super Bowl hype sweeping the world I decided if I can’t beat ‘em I might as well join ‘em. I stayed up last night to catch the match and really have very little to say about the game, I guess it was a fitting end to the career of Peyton Manning is he decides to throw in the towel this year. However, the real winner of the Super Bowl was the adverts. There was a plethora of great adverts including some of the best movie trailers for this year’s hottest films. Today I thought I’d just give a quick rundown of my top five favourite trailers from this year’s Super Bowl and some of my thoughts on each.
Number Five: Borne
We didn’t really get much in this trailer but it’s brilliant to see Matt Damon back playing the closest role America has to James Bond. This trailer was fast paced and punchy with just the right level of mystery to get everyone guessing about where Borne could be heading next.
Number Four: Independence Day: Resurgence
This looks like the disaster movie of the decade, set to raise the bar in a way that only is predecessor has done previously. This film is going to be huge. I have to say it’s seriously lacking the presence of Will Smith but it looks like Jeff Goldblum is more than happy to take on the lead himself.
Number Three: X-Men Apocalypse
Psylocke looks even cooler than I could have imagined. The rest of the trailer was mostly footage we have seen already that was slightly expanded or edited. I’m seriously hyped for this film. Also the fight between Nightcrawler and Angel looks really interesting as both have moment-related powers, creating an agility based fight that we haven’t really seen before.
Number Two: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2
I’m as shocked as everyone else that this trailer is so damn good. It really shouldn’t be. The first film was weak and I fear for this entry into the series but goddamit I want to see this film. It’s great to see Krang pop-up as it looks like the studio are really embracing the wacky side of the Turtles universe.
Number One: Captain America: Civil War
I couldn’t stop talking for around five minutes after this trailer finished. Seeing the heroes square off against each other. Watching Captain America and Bucky work together as a team. Even seeing Tony Stark’s new technology. It all send my mind racing as I began to construct super hero battle after super hero battle in an attempt to determine who would win and how. I’m a Team Cap supporter all the way but if anyone wants to try and convince me otherwise I’m open to a good argument.
