BearSleuth Opinion Piece: I’m Really getting into One Punch Man

This week has been really busy. Between university, social commitments and my work for Daily News Service, it’s been tough so I’m going take an easy out today and talk about the one thing that has got me through the last week. One Punch Man. I love One Punch Man, it is the perfect combination of satirical humour and honest ruminations on the nature of morality, challenge and life. At the end of a long day it is the perfect thing to switch off and read. I guess this is a bit of a review but as I have already reviewed this for Daily News Service take this as more of a ‘what you can get from this as a writer’ article. If you haven’t caught my Daily News Service article you can find it here.

Humour is a really difficult thing to master in writing. In comic books it can be even harder as you don’t have the immersion of a film or implied reader-relationship of a book. One Punch Man achieves a lot of humour through absurdity and parody which have always been two staples in the world of comics. If you are a writer or a creative of any type it’s probably worth studying how One Punch Man achieves humour while still maintaining consistency. It’s easy when attempting absurdity to lose all consistency to your narrative and this is something One Punch Man comfortably avoids.

Another thing to learn from One Punch Man is pacing. Each individual chapter of the first two volumes of One Punch Man stand well as their own piece. However, nothing ever feels rushed and every character seems to have a fairy strong backstory as well as a motivation that is individual and unique. The entire series is an exercise in balance and should be appreciated as such. It’s helped me maintain balance in my life this week and I hope it can help you do the same.
