BearSleuth Opinion Piece: Should Luke Be Evil?

The world of Star Wars fandom is overrun at the moment with questions ‘why was Luke not in the recent batch of promotional material?’ and ‘Why is it that Han Solo is the one telling people about the force?’ to both those questions there seems to be a pretty simple answer. Luke might have turned to the dark side of the force like his father. This prospect has Star Wars fans up in arms as Luke was the hero for the light side of the force, of course there are a lot of other reasons that Luke could be out of action which begs the question ‘In Star Wars: The Force Awakens should Luke be evil?’.

I’m going to go with, yes Luke should be as bad as a big ol’ Sith Lord. The force is in a state of disrepair at the end of return of the Jedi and while Luke defeated the Emperor there was still an active Empire the pressure of leading the rebellion could lead Luke to searching for more power. At the beginning of the film I think Luke could be on the turn, becoming far too zealous against storm troopers, crushing them in their armour or even force choking them to death. Kylo Renn talks about ‘finishing’ Darth Vader’s work in the trailer, which many consider to be finishing the death star, however I believe it could be turning Luke to the dark side.

Luke as a villain or anti-hero could prove to be an interesting character arc that would very much play into the lore of the universe. As it was established that Jedi who were taught when they were too old had a tendency to go to the dark side. It would make a lot of sense for Luke to fall but I also think he would be redeemable, and that’s where the new generation would come into play as the new Star Wars series becomes a battle, in part, for Luke’s soul.

See, Star Wars seem to have this tradition of killing off mentors, whether it’s Yoda, Obi-Wan or Qui-Gon, they all die in the end. Which probably means that Han Solo is going to die in the next few films, but it also means that for Luke to survive he might need to escape the mentor role and become something different. I would like to see Luke turn to the dark side at the climax of The Force Awakens and attempt to kill Kylo Renn. This could set Luke down a path to find himself that could one day lead to him to becoming a Sith Lord or a Jedi Master!
