A creator, of any discipline, is capable of one thing and one thing only, the ability to create. To take some words, or paint, or instruments and bring the immaterial into the world of the material. So, how can you become a better creator ? Well, there’s always practicing your craft, but that is something every creator should be doing and your looking to stand out from the crowd. Another way to become a better creator is to gain more life experience, life experience forms the backbone of every creators repertoire. You simply can not create, or recreate, an experience without first experiencing it. This leaves us with another question though, how does a writer gain more life experience? It’s quite simple really, by living.

Question: Why is every Marvel Comic set in and around New York? Answer: Because Stan Lee and his pals had never really left New York when they started writing for the company. The only life experiences they had revolved around Manhattan and little else so their characters lives revolved around Manhattan. There is nothing wrong with this, New York is probably one of he most vibrant settings in the world. However, if your life experience consists of a few towns and villages in middle England, you might want to consider broadening your experience. There is no easier way to do this than through travel.

I am currently writing on a Virgin Pendeleino train traveling over a hundred miles an hour across the English countryside. Fields, estates and forests are all breezing past my window with dizzying speed and all I can do is smile. I have spent the last few days in the north of England, personally my favourite part of the country, and I’m currently returning to my university residence in the south. It’s a journey I make at least once a month, and every time I look at both parts of the country with fresh eyes, finding new details and picking up new vibes. I’ve been doing this for three years now and I’ve only just began to fully understand how much of an impact it’s had on my writing.

As I’ve realised that my writing was improving with these journeys I’ve hatched a devilish scheme, which I am fully prepared to share with you. If you’re a university student your probably went to college with a lot of people who didn’t go to the same university as you, in fact they probably spread up and down the country. In this modern age of social media this means that a student traveler never has to worry about accommodation, because it is everywhere. In the last two months I’ve managed to visit almost every major city in England through strategic use of my college friends and family. Believe me, once you get used to sleeping on a floor it becomes the most comfortable place in the entire world!
